Early Childhood Development in East Asia

The first few years of life constitute a foundational period for cognitive, social, and emotional development, with enduring consequences for later life achievements and social stratification. In East Asia, rapid socio-economic transformation and ongoing reforms in education and family policy have heightened the importance of systematic empirical research on the environments, processes, and outcomes of early childhood development. While there are extensive longitudinal studies on early childhood in Western countries, there is limited scholarly exchange focused on data systems, methodologies, findings, and policy issues relevant to East Asian contexts.

Against this backdrop, Chinese Sociological Review (CSR) invites submissions for a special issue on Early Childhood Development in East Asia. This issue aims to deepen both empirical and theoretical understanding by featuring research that presents and evaluates data on early childhood, introduces innovative measurement methods for developmental outcomes and environments, contributes to theory development in early childhood research, and offers evidence-based policy insights on education and care. We encourage submissions from a variety of academic disciplines and institutional backgrounds, with a strong focus on empirical studies utilizing longitudinal research designs.

We are particularly interested in contributions that address, but are not limited to, the following topics:

Family dynamics, parenting practices, and their impact on early development

Early childhood education and care systems, access, and disparities

Multi-layered contextual influences on early childhood development

Social policies and institutional frameworks affecting early childhood outcomes

Submission Guideline

Authors who want their work to be considered for publication in this special issue should email an extended abstract (no more than 1,000 words) to specialcsr@gmail.com, with the subject line “CSR Early Childhood Development in East Asia Special Issue” by April 30, 2026.

Extended abstracts will be evaluated by the editorial team primarily based on the relevance of their topics and the significance of their research. Authors of accepted abstracts will be invited to present and discuss drafts of their papers at a workshop held at the University of Hong Kong on June 26, 2026. Following the workshop, invitations to submit full-length research articles will be sent to the selected authors. All submitted manuscripts will undergo a thorough peer-review process prior to publication. The final versions of the papers are due by April 30, 2027. The special issue is anticipated to be published online in Fall 2027.
