Identity Objects: Entry and Identity Translation in Modern Social Interaction
Abstract: Prevailing theories of interaction have predominantly concentrated on relations among human subjects, overlooking the material dimensions that render the initiation of interaction possible. This paper argues that in modem society, access to interaction is established by objects. The beginning of everyday interaction originates from "identity objects". An "identity object" is a material entity that translates individuals into interactive relationships through processes such as subject positioning, information simplification and complexification, and personal differentiation. Furthermore, based on the axes of body-society and institution-culture, identity objects can be classified into various types, revealing distinct specific translation methods. The theory of identity objects not only offers a theoretical foundation for subsequent empirical studies on the material dimensions of social interaction, but also reveals a moral dilemma in modern society: the identification of subject identity is increasingly trending toward "recognizing objects rather than humans".
